It was done0:05in scaffolding at the base of a large sloping skyscraper with the words grace embedded over0:13its entrance. The scaffolding is gone, the wall is gone, but to locate where the drawing was made,0:19face the building and look for the second strut in from the left. And there you have it.0:24This is Dennis Carey. He was drawn in September of 2002. His drawing is counting three people.0:33Construction zones are perfect for our drawings. Because they are definably temporary in nature,0:40they are the ideal complement to the fleeting process we are embracing.0:44And since these spaces lack a towering sense of ownership, they are oddly more accessible as truly public spaces.0:51Our friend of ours who works in the city passes this site every day.0:55We had lunch with her the day this figure was drawn.0:59She was left with a hand drawn map of all the locations of the drawings done that day.1:04In the days that follow, she was surprised to see so many of the figures remaining up.1:08She remarked recently about the personal impact of knowing that her routine had been altered1:14slightly and that this was a shared experience with everyone that passed by these firemen.1:19When he was not on the job, Mr. Carey, 51, loved to travel with his wife and their two children, Nicole, 25, and Dennis, Jr., 22.1:26We lived, Gene Carey said a day after his funeral.1:29A lot of people who pass on, they say about them that they lived two lives.1:33We lived three. We've done everything with our children.← Location 161Heart Two · Location 162Location 163 →
