Our drawing was done on the glass of this abandoned storefront originally. It's0:33to the right of the door. Since then, the cinder block around the glass has been painted0:38with a muted orange. This is Thomas Gambino. He was drawn in March of 2003. His drawing0:47is counting ten people. A long line of ideal drawing spots present themselves to us. Rejected0:55restaurants, strip clubs huddled together sharing in their own quiet misery. In our time crawling1:01the city, these are the sort of spaces that we love to find. These unwatched shelves provide an1:08oasis in a world of open apprehension and tense street interactions that occasionally accompany1:14our unusual performances. This entire undertaking is unfolding on spaces that people do not typically1:21see. These spaces are passed by every day, yet remain invisible. How many times does someone's1:28daily routine take them by this space? How often does this person deviate from their path to1:34discover these spaces? When does curiosity override routine and these lost spaces become1:40fresh and alive and a catalyst for curiosity, satisfied by only exploration into what lies1:47behind each little stoop, tiny service door, and narrow entranceway. Family values was the watchword1:55for this firefighter whose spare time was devoted to his wife Janet and their two sons, Tommy, 20,2:01and Brian, 14, and to the life of their church. The boys were altar boys at Ave Maria,2:06and when they got interested in surfing, Gambino went along with them to Robert Moses Beach.← Location 233Heart Three · Location 234Location 235 →
