It was on 60th Street between 10th and 11th Avenue on the north side of the street. As I remember, the drawing was made originally on a blue door framed by a deteriorating brick building.0:15At some point in the last three years, the decision was made to remove that building.0:21And as of spring 2006, the space that the building existed in is a collection of brick dust, rubble, and planks of wood piled eight feet high.0:31This space is easily accessible with lots of holes in the chenking-link fence, spaces0:37between the gates, and gaps in the shoddily constructed wooden barrier between the public0:43sidewalk and this empty wasteland.0:46The drawing was made approximately ten feet to the left of this tree.0:52The south side of the street has suffered a similar fate as the north side of the street.0:58Both buildings facing each other had been removed.1:02This is Denis Germain.1:04He was drawn in March of 2003.1:08His drawing is counting 10 people.1:11This quiet city street could be drawn on all day.1:14At the back of a school building, we find an interesting blue door.1:18This school has the traces of being abandoned and neglected,1:21and we fail to come up with a conclusion as to its present state.1:26We work from the assumption that it is fully operational, and I spend my time while drawing, hypothesizing about the function of this door.1:34Custodial staff? Service entrance? Floodgate for hundreds of backpacked children?1:41Well, whoever comes to this door will find a drawing of Dennis the firefighter, and I finished up the drawing while contemplating the range of reactions this single drawing might receive.1:51David Germain's other specialty at Ladder 2 was starting enormous debates in the firehouse kitchen1:56with politically incorrect statements he was sure would set people off.2:01As the argument heated up, he would slip away.2:04He loved what he did, said his brother Brian, a firefighter.← Location 247Heart Three · Location 248Location 249 →
