Next to the street on the west side of the street is a huge chain link fence0:31fencing in the largest basketball court arena I've seen in New York City. On some0:37given days that arena is filled with people selling their wares and sharing0:43their stuff.0:46This is Robin Lynne Kaplan. She was drawn in June of 2003.0:51[unclear]. Her drawing is counting seven people.0:59This drawing is on a piece of furniture in the middle of the street. As we rounded the corner1:04onto the street, we were greeted with a small carnival of activity. On one side of the sidewalk1:09was parked a large truck that two guys were spray painting a mural onto. On the other side of the1:15the sidewalk was a flea market, and behind the truck was a tall white bureau that was the perfect1:21size for one figure. I set off into the flea market to find out who owned such a bureau and to ask1:28the question. After many inquiries, I was guided to a man and his wife sitting in the shade under1:34a tarp surrounded by large furniture. The one on the street had apparently been sold and was going1:40to be picked up sometime soon. However, he took great interest in the project and with a little1:45corner-mouth smile and a wink told me I had better hurry up. The lane was blocked off by a police car1:52and we set off on the task of drawing Robin Lynne Kaplan. As I drew the figure and Adriana made the1:59long hair, cars shot by us only a few feet away. We chatted with the graffiti guys as they worked2:06on transforming the back of the truck. This is one of the drawings that I2:10embraced the most, a true product of the city from start to finish.2:16When Rob and Kaplan's friends bickered, she would chime in, harmony. She was the2:21peacekeeper, and if they kept fighting, she would put her hand to her temple and2:25say, oh my head. Although by nature a peacemaker, Miss Kaplan hated to be the2:31center of attention. She made everyone feel welcome, Ms. Darnidi said. What you saw is what2:37you got. She didn't put on airs, said Francine Kaplan.← Location 274Heart Three · Location 275Location 276 →
