Under the oversight of the Bartolino gang, they've repainted the wall from white0:35to red. They've taken the windows and transformed them into long vertical walk-in windows. The0:42windows are framed by wood with swimming stained grains. The little black external lamps that0:50were originally on this wall are still there. And the drawings location is beneath the third0:55lamp from the right off the intersection of 2nd and 78th.1:01This is Mildred Rose Naiman.1:04She was drawn in June of 2003.1:08Her drawing is counting five people.1:12I know just enough Spanish to be able to describe1:15the process of making drawings out of tape. I am at a loss1:19for being able to describe the intentions behind those drawings.1:22Drawings. Standing at the counter of this store, I am reduced to a child who wants to draw. I can1:29enthusiastically express the desire, place, medium, and time that I will be drawing, but I do not have1:36the vocabulary to say why. Learning more Spanish would definitely help, not just here but in general.1:43In the summer, I teach drawing at the Rhode Island School of Design. During those summers, I spend all1:49my time trying to empower young artists with an eye to critique and a heart to evaluate and discuss1:55their own work and others. And what I learn every summer is how difficult it is to articulate one's2:02own art and can be nothing but healthy to feel the awkward isolation of not being able to express my2:09thoughts either. Luckily they were very kind, heard me out, and gave me the universal nod of approval2:16that allowed me to go outside and speak onto their walls using this universal2:22visual language of mine. Despite knee replacement surgeries that forced her to2:27be pushed through Boston Logan's Airport in a wheelchair, the feisty grandmother2:31refused to stop her regular trips to see her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.2:37She lived her life at full tilt. She called her apartment in Andover,2:41Massachusetts, her bachelorette pad, and she kept her friends there busy2:45organizing shopping excursions, dinners out, and weekend trips. She headed to2:50California twice a year to visit her sons, usually taking American Airlines2:55flight 11, as she did on September 11th.← Location 311Heart Three · Location 312Location 313 →
