He was drawn in May of 2004.0:36His drawing is counting one person.0:58Okay.1:00Saris Sarasini, number 38, heart one.1:05He's here.1:06We're going to walk to the other side of this square right here and put a figure of Mr.1:15Russell.1:16It's going to be about a block that direction.1:21And today's fair will include this neighborhood.1:26So we'll walk through here.1:27Hopefully by the end of today we'll be to this point and beyond.2:16We spend as much time as we can looking at the photographs of these people before we2:21draw.2:22We're dealing with obviously just a facing forward depiction.2:31We don't get the privilege of a profile, but we give it our best shot.2:38Trying to get a sense of bulk, trying to get a sense of general size.3:10How has your opinion of the project changed over the last three years?3:16What's the largest change?3:18The largest change primarily is organization.3:22That's been the big change.3:28It's changed because before, for a greater time it was a solo effort.3:35It's turned into a fantastic collaboration between many people, including yourself.3:45and it's become essential to have ourselves organized in a way that we can3:54share the information fluidly amongst ourselves and though the process this4:01initial process of drawing the people where they're going to be drawn how4:05they're going to be done hasn't changed the lick the net the product of all this4:13effort has changed quite a bit. That's the graphic design side of it.4:17Broad decisions were made early on and those broad decisions have stayed true.4:27It's definitely improved a lot.4:37I'm fortunate enough to be collaborating with really talented computer people, so that's4:45that people are really graphically keen.4:49So it went from being a little more of a hodgepodge of web pages to being a little more finely4:58finely tuned.5:20In a much broader sense, the big thing that's changed is like, this project initially, the5:29fleeting ideas, the fleeting ideas, we assume we're only going to take 15 minutes to finish.5:36This has taken long enough that we've gone to war with two countries.5:39It started in [unclear] war.5:43But the context for this project, the project hasn't changed,5:47but everything around it has been changing quite a bit.5:58Learned a lot from this.6:04Stephen Russell was a firefighter who worked wonders with wood.6:09build furniture and cabinets, and once even made a wave-skipping hydroplane that he raced6:14around Jamaica Bay.6:16Firefighter Russell of Engine Company 55 also built a display case at his fire station in6:22Little Italy that became a memorial to him and four colleagues who died at the World6:27Trade Center.6:28Black-framed pictures of them now hang there.← Location 38Heart One · Location 39Location 40 →
