This beaten wooden fence separates the sidewalk from an empty lot with sporadic vegetation in it.0:15And on the far left-hand side of this fence, just before it meets an apartment building,0:21the drawing was made just to the left of graffiti that starts with the letter M.0:26As of spring 2006, the graffiti on this wall is testimony to the power of spray paint0:33and its undulling qualities and ability to last throughout the years.0:38This is Dennis Mulligan.0:41He was drawn in July of 2004.0:45His drawing is counting one person.0:47We haven't talked about how the project's finished.0:50I know we're getting there.0:52Okay.0:52But if everybody has access...0:54The question is, what are people looking for when they go?0:58First and foremost, they're looking for names.1:00They're looking for the names of their loved ones.1:02We went through and made, basically, alphabet pages,1:06the A's, the B's, the C's,1:08and then went through and individually linked1:11every single page to every single name.1:13name. So it technically does the trick but it doesn't serve the most simple navigation1:20method that everybody participates in which is here's a little box, you type the name1:24in and push go. On top of that, the names are spread across maybe several pages, you1:32want to be able to access them all. The next thing that people are most interested in is1:38where did you do it in relationship to their memory of New York City their1:42memories not ours so we have to have all the addresses be searchable in1:48relationship to the names also so you have to be able to say my cousin John1:51Smith who is drawn at East 108th Street and 2nd Avenue right or say okay I live1:57in Murray Hill did they come through my neighborhood or wait a second I saw one2:01one of these green firemen over on 13th Street.2:06And you type in 13th Street, and every drawing of 13th Street pops up,2:10and you say, yes, in fact, that is the drawing that I saw.2:14Maybe you saw his face inside the fire truck racing through Midtown streets.2:18Or maybe you saw him marching in his blue uniform in the St. Patrick's Day parade.2:23You'd remember that he was tall and broad-shouldered,2:26with what Neil Scow, his lieutenant at Ladder Company 2, called2:31an Irish smile that he had, and then you'd know a little bit about him.← Location 457Heart Four · Location 458Location 459 →
