The service door has no handle on it and has all the earmarks of a lot of security.0:31To the right of it is a mishmash collection of doorbells, pipes, conduits, vents, and0:41a white frame holding nothing. What we drew here, there was a pile of wooden pallets and0:47the figure was drawn sitting about three and a half feet off the sidewalk. As of Spring0:52Spring 2006, the pallets are gone and scaffolding has replaced it as the next temporary object1:00on [unclear] street.1:02This is B.C. Charles Kasper.1:06He was drawn in July of 2003.1:10His drawing is counting five people.1:16I remember this space fondly.1:18It is one of the few spaces that I recall as being completely mine to do with what I wish.1:24This is a product of several things.1:27For starters, we have been drawing all day.1:29We have seen a lot today.1:32The sun is setting, and today's efforts have accumulated themselves in a temporary state of ownership.1:38My sense of what I am doing right now is infused with the emerging sense that I have an obligation and right to do it.1:45There is some truth to that, but that ultimately is a dangerous attitude to have.1:50To have that attitude detaches me from the situation, alienates me from the owners of these spaces,1:56and reduces me to someone making work in the privacy of my own home.2:01As a public artist, I must attempt to maintain a balance.2:05The process of tape art provides a means to investigate public spaces and all the complexities that come along with it.2:14Drawing is a right, but it is also a privilege.2:18I've provided myself the space and time for this privilege,2:21and all of us are doing our best to use these drawings for the use of the greater good.2:27Our day will be wrapping up soon,2:29and with a fresh day of drawing will come the inevitable suspense, thrill, and mystery of our process.2:36For now, I will enjoy this invulnerable feeling and go from there.2:43The 54-year-old veteran of dozens of rescues was having a day off when he heard about the World Trade Center attacks.2:50He scrambled into a spare fire engine, parked near his home in Staten Island, and sped to the towers.2:56He had a motto, drive it like it's stolen, recalled Jim Elson, a retired captain.← Location 329Heart Three · Location 330Location 331 →
