Henry MillerMarcus Garvey Park between W 122nd St and W 121st StHeart Four · Location 432 · Drawn July 2004Download photograph 1Download photograph 2Download photograph 3Download photograph 4Download photograph 5Download photograph 6Download photograph 7Download photograph 8Download photograph 9Download photograph 10Download photograph 11Download photograph 12Download photograph 13Download photograph 14Download photograph 15Download photograph 16Download photograph 17Download photograph 18Show all 18 photographsVideo podcast0:00This drawing was drawn at the highest, flattest point in the Marcus Garvey Park.0:04If you travel up the twisting, ascending staircase, you'll find paths and more stairs.0:10And eventually, if you just keep traveling up, you'll reach a plaza lined with flat stones0:16overlooking the city in all directions.0:19Two prominent features at the top of this ascent is a large metal structure housing0:26causing a single bell, and further to the north, a particularly large tree with arms0:31reaching out in all directions.0:33This drawing was drawn on tape at the base of this wide tree on the side of the trunk0:40facing to the west.0:42This is Henry Miller.0:45He was drawn in July of 2004.0:49His drawing is counting one person.0:53Right now we are in Marcus Garvey Park and we climbed some stone steps.0:59We're now on a little stone plateau on the top with a very interesting bell tower structure.1:06It's really beautiful but you can't seem to enter it.1:09Yeah, I wonder when they actually sound the bell.1:11I'm inclined to say never.1:14Somebody has keys to that.1:15Somebody must have keys to it but it's...1:17It has the look and feel of an electrical tower.1:21You think that you could definitely hurt yourself by drinking, but it's just a bell.1:25But a beautiful wrapping spiral staircase around this round structure.1:31So where or what was the drawing that was made on this little stone terrace?1:36The drawing up here was made on sort of the farthest point away from Fifth Avenue1:42on this uppermost terrace in Marcus Garvey Park on a tree with tape.1:47sort of this beautifully standing alone large tree.1:52Oh, this is on the other side of the fence now.1:55Was this fence here when you made the drawing?1:58No, it wasn't.1:59And oddly enough, when Mike and I were here a few weeks ago2:03to redocument these sites, there was actually more fencing closing us off.2:08So I can't really explain that.2:11I wonder why this fence is here.2:12Like, why would they have this space closed off?2:14Do we know?2:15It would just be too beautiful.2:17That's what happened.2:18It's such an amazing courtyard.2:21Don't you think this was the theater for some ball at some point?2:25Let's go look at the view.2:28So the drawing was made on this tree?2:30Yeah.2:30And what was the drawing?2:31It was a fireman drawn with tape on the tree.2:34It's a really beautiful, wide tree.2:38Very sturdy looking.2:40This is the highest point that we draw in the entire project.2:44and um topographically topographically speaking and also just sort of as a majestic addition to2:52that not only being the highest point it's it's sort of framed 360 degrees by the park and the2:59neighborhood around it and then it's on the most proud tree at the top of this park sort of you3:07know looking over harlem and looking back down in manhattan it's just sort of a great watch post3:13So we were just so pleased to be able to draw this fireman in this location.3:17Are we looking over the Bronx, or what? Is this still Harlem?3:21Brooklyn, over there. So across the river we got Brooklyn.3:25Harlem continues up this way towards the Bronx.3:28New York is so great.3:32Oh, cool. Look at this neat view. Wow.3:35What a nice park.3:39He took maddeningly long to finish anything.3:43woodworking, roofs, stories.3:45His Massapequa, New York garage was a testament3:48to the potential of broken objects,3:50the dream of a thousand some days3:52when he would get around to fixing them.3:55Countless hours giving pep talks3:57to a woman who lived on the street,3:59she would later credit him with the decision4:01to get off welfare, find work, and start a bank.← Location 431Heart Four · Location 432Location 433 →
